The world’s gone nuts for plant-based diets. So what’s all the fuss about?

There’s no disputing it: plant-based diets are everywhere.  Not only are supermarkets working hard to improve their vegan offering, but the London restaurant scene is buzzing with hip new meat and dairy-free dining experiences. And with an estimated three million people set to try veganism for size this year in the UK alone, it’s clear this new plant-based food craze isn’t going anywhere soon.

So what’s making us all so keen to ditch meat and dairy and embrace plant-based? Obviously there are health benefits (it’s well documented that a plant-based diet is rich in nutrients, low in fat and sugar, can help reduce cholesterol, and protects against certain cancers and heart disease). It’s even been suggested by a recent Harvard study that a vegan diet is the key to a longer, healthier life. Then there are the environmental benefits (a reduction in animal agriculture means less harmful greenhouse gases in our atmosphere). And let’s face it, there’s never been a better time to try out a plant-based diet. What was once the mainstay of treehuggers and hippies has burst into the mainstream, and today there’s an undeniable hipster cache associated with veganism. And this trend has led to an abundance of readily available, high-quality vegan foods.
